York is blessed with an abundance of superb historic buildings, every corner you turn you'll be discovering layers of history dating back to Roman, Viking and Medieval periods.
Start your day at York Minster the largest medieval Gothic Church north of the Alps. Taking 250 years to complete, it contains perfect examples of both Norman and Gothic work.
The Minster also offers amazing views from the Tower, spectacular stained glass and audio tours of the Undercroft. (Allow 2-3 hours with audio tour and Tower).Treasurer's House, just across from York Minster, portrays a whole range of periods within the façade of a mainly 17th Century house. Built on the site of the original Treasurer's House and over a Roman Road. The house fell into disrepair, until rescued by wealthy businessman Frank Green and is the source of one of the city's most famous ghost stories. (Allow 1 hour).
Cliffords Tower was once the central stronghold of York Castle, originally built by William the Conqueror. It now stands as a proud symbol of York's historic, dominance echoing the might of the kings who once ruled in York. Magnificent views of the city can be enjoyed from here. (Allow 45 minutes).
The Merchant Adventurers Hall was built between 1357 & 1361 and is the finest building of its date and type in Europe. Visitors to are able to experience the Great Hall where business was conducted, courts were held and social events were attended. They can also visit the Undercroft and Chapel to understand the many religious practices that took place. The Hall also boasts fine collections of paintings, furniture and silver, all of which are on display to the public. (Allow 1 hour)
The Shambles, once a former street of butchers, is now one of the most photographed locations in York. A Medieval street with half-timbered buildings which, at some points almost touch each other. Today, The Shambles is full of unique shopping boutiques, and tea shops making it hard to imagine the butchers' remains which used to litter the street back then... (Allow 15-30 minutes).
Fairfax House, is a stunning 18th Century interior with outstanding Georgian furniture. This is one of the finest historic house museums in England, dating back to 1750 created by the architect John Carr. (Allow 1 hour)
