York and the surrounding area have some of the most beautiful countryside, parks and landscaped gardens in the UK. The following are just some of the places which you can build into an itinerary for a tranquil and peaceful setting or for those horticultural fans who just love gardens!

The closest to home is the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens in the Centre of York, situated in 10 acres of beautiful botanical gardens. The Museum Gardens are also where the spectacular ruins of the 11th Century St. Mary's Abbey lie, which offer an oasis of serenity in the heart of York.

One of Yorkshires most relaxing yet inspriring locations - RHS Garden Harlow Carr. The 58 acre garden includes Streamside garden, vegetables, scented herb and foliage gardens, woodland and wildflower meadow. The gardens also host some spectacular family events and festivals all year round along with extensive Plant Centre, Gift Shop and new Bettys Tea rooms. (Allow a full day).

Another fabulous location is The Walled garden at Scampston. This is a year round contemporary garden which has rhythmic design an innovative planting. It has a bold mix of informal and informal elements created by plantsman and designer Piet Oudolf. (Allow half a day to a day).

York is the ideal base to head out to the many stately homes in the surrounding area, all which have stunning grounds and gardens. To name a few worth visiting include Beningbrough Hall and Gardens, Castle Howard and Newby Hall and Gardens. (Allow half a day to a full day for each).
