The Arts
Along with its history, heritage and architecture, York has a very vibrant Art Scene. The following are just some of the art sights to be enjoyed and explored on the Art front:
York Art Gallery has just undergone a £445,000 refurbishment project along with a new café and learning room called The Studio with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Gallery is free entry and has a fine collection of British and European art from the last 600 years under themed areas. There is also a range of contemporary work and modern approaches with video, photography, ceramics, and dyed black turkey feathers!! A programme of special exhibitions, events and family activities run throughout the year. (Allow 1-2 hours).
For a totally contemporary feel, take a trip to the Impressions Gallery. This gallery is set in a restored Georgian Townhouse and has a contrasting and very much a modern approach to photography and media installation work by British and International artists. There is also a conservatory attached to the gallery, ideal as a meeting place and to stop for a coffee and a resource centre with specialist photography to view and purchase. (allow 30 minutes-1 hour).
York also has many smaller galleries and shops selling fine art. To name a few include Minster Fine Arts on Low Petergate which display a range of Modern, contemporary and traditional pictures, prints and paintings. Another is the Braithwaite Gallery, again located on Low Petergate which showcases the work of MJ Braithwaite. In addition it exhibits originals by other artists. Specialties include limited and open editions - wildlife, dogs, landscape, aviation, figurative, contemporary from internationally renowned artists such as David Shepherd, Kay Boyce, Fletcher Sibthorp, Govinder, Lawrence Coulson and Jack Vettriano.
To round off the day off for children and adults, visit the Jorvik Brass Rubbing Centre at Lady Anne Middletons Hotel. They have a collection of replica brasses which provide the ideal quieter activity for daytime or evenings. School groups are also welcome with prior booking. All materials are supplied and instructions given. (Allow 1 hour).
